Millennium Jazz Orchestra – Octopus part 1 Evolution
Octopus part 1: Evolution
Composed and conducted by Joan Reinders
Piano solo: Dirk Balthaus
Live recording at Theater Bouwkunde, Deventer May 2nd
Octopus is the title of the new album by Millennium Jazz Orchestra. Conductor Joan Reinders composed a suite in 8 parts inspired by the curious and unique creature that the octopus is.
The first part of the Octopus suite is titled Evolution. The start is silent, it represents the long way evolution has to go. The piece opens with the Leitmotiv in a fugue for three flutes. Elaborating on the Leitmotiv with the theme in flugelhorns, the Leitmotiv is then repeated with a different harmonisation, after which pianist Dirk Balthaus displays his ability. After a ‘man with the hammer’ tutti, the piece fades out quietly with three flutes.
The album release is on December 5th at Theater Bouwkunde, Deventer.
With special guest Hermine Deurloo (chromatic harmonica).
