“Mensch, durf te leven” (“Man, dare to live”) is a composition by Dirk Witte, in 1917.
This Dutch song encourages people to enjoy life more and not to ask so many questions. Thematically, the text is opposed to the still so influential social control in 1917, and to the acceptance of authoritarian morality.
In 2015, band leader Joan Reinders made an arrangement of this song for the WDR Big Band, with pianist Bert van den Brink.
Now this arrangement is on the newest CD ‘Lookin’ East’ and the piano feature is played by Marius van den Brink (no family) and Suzan Veneman on flugelhorn.
This recording is from the live performance in Schouwburg Hengelo, in 2016.
